Your feet sink into the moist soil; muttering and whisperings become louder as a symphony of groans surrounds you. The only light here comes from a few glowing mushrooms but even in the glume, you cannot miss the source of the sounds. Hundreds of humanoid creatures peek up from the ground mold and fungi grow in and around them. Someone speaks out to you, her face is half rotten with giant pustules about to burst… The garden comes alive with screams of the buried victims as they force themselves upward out of the ground as something moves along the foul grounds in your direction.

This diorama is a interactive battle map for the game Dungeons and Dragons. This map is for the pre written campaign Out of the Abyss during the battle in "the Garden of Horror", a mystical mushroom forest turned evil.

Mushroom Trees

Mushroom trees were shaped after real mushrooms with a dark fantasy twist. Mushroom trees were sculpted out of polymer clay because it is light and holds small details. I created a texture stamp for the tops of the mushrooms with an oil based clay and hot glue.

Airbrushing

Airbrushing allowed me to create smooth gradients that I would otherwise not be able to easily achieve with a brush it also, allows for thin even coats on small detailed pieces.

LED Mycelium Trail

Mini wire LED lights were twisted together to create little clusters of glowing mushrooms.

Portability

Instead of permanently fixing the trees to the base they were slotted into the foam with a wire peg to make it easier to store and transport. The base of this project can also be separated into three diffrent pieces for the same reasons.

I created a miniature pressure plate that activates the lights when a player sets their game pieces on the map.
