This is a mock installation proposal and miniature prototype for a SXSW parody event called East by NorthEast. For my Installation I want to create a large animatronic character that would sit outside to greet guest. The character I came up with is Big East, a giant charismatic cowboy skeleton that sits on top of a welcome sign. Basing this on SXSW I themed him to be a sorta texas stereotype/fun cowboy character as people form all over come to austin for SXSW.

The goal for this is to create a visually interesting welcome sign that not only serves as a welcome to our guests at East by NorthEast but has an interactive exhibit.

This is a brainstorming sheet for a mechanism that would move two eyes with one servo. This ideas changed over time.

This would be controlled by a staff member nearby. The staff member has a controller that allows them to shift Big East’s eyes back and forth.The jaw would be microphone activated which allows the person controlling it to play pre recorded audio or speak from a headset for more personalized interactions.

Big East sits on top of a large glowing welcome sign outside where guests can take pictures and grab maps and get information about the day’s events. When people come up to grab a pamphlet or take a picture Big East can shift his eyes and open his mouth to speak and get a reaction out of the guest. Big East would say snarky phrases such as “Hey that’s mine!” as a guest picks something up or “You’re not from around here are you?”

I wanted this project to be controlled wirelessly so I used a transmitter and RC controller to move the servo.

After figuring out how to move the eyes wirelessly, I began working on attaching both of them together to use 1 motor.
